OUGD504 MOCK UP

Iv'e created a simple mockup for my final crit. This is half way between rough and a final product. I believe that these could be the final materials I use in the production of my book. There were quite a few problems with the mock up however which are simply addressed but would require bit of extra attention when producing a final one. I wouldn't want to lose any money. Obviously I haven't embossed the cover yet as I haven't had the chance yet but a separate embossed piece will accompany it in the crit giving my peers a good idea of how it would look.

One of my first issues is with the creep of the book. I have used quite a thick 120gsm paper stock for the inside of the book giving the book a major creep when all folded together and prepared for binding. This has set the crop marks extremely out of place with each other. I cut the pages by hand which proved quite difficult due to it being so thick and left quite a messy cut with some lines that weren't even straight. Since the crop marks were out of place, the print has even been cut of on some pages. As you get closer to the middle of the book, the image cuts closer to the edge and then back out again. Obviously, I'd want it to be the same on every page. I can calculate this creep on the next mock up and use inDesign to account for this, lining the crop marks up perfectly when folded. I will also use the electric guillotine to slice the book perfectly and as accurately as possible.

Finally another major issue the mock up had was with the binding. In the central page where the butterfly bound insert enters, it has become really loose and the pages aren't as tight together as I would have imagined. This is because the hole that is cut with the insert sliding through it is quite large compared to the insert. It has to be exactly the same size as the insert so that the pages don't move or rattle around at all. This has made to pages become slightly uneven. The way I can fix this is just by carefully measuring exactly where the pages need to be cut in the center and also how big the incision is. I may even have to widen the hole slightly since this insert doesn't turn as smoothly as the other pages because of the paper stocks thickness.
