OUGD504 DEVELOPED IDEA

My idea has changed since the initial phase of this brief. I thought it was important to keep the current idea written down so it doesn't stray too far from the brief. After further trial and error with production I have decided that the best way to represent memorial masonry simply within my production is to use as little materials as possible. This is because when the masons would create their work they'd have their tools and only one form of material to work on, the stone. I would convey this idea by also using as little materials as possible. This means no thread or glue in the binding process, only the paper in the publication. A butterfly bind is the perfect one for the job as it only uses the pages within being cut and folded together to complete a successful bind. The cover would still be embossed with the title 'In loving memory of' to represent a worked upon headstone. The insert with the quote I sourced would sit in the middle page where the bind leaves a small tip in. This matches the aesthetic of the book perfectly as having a large chunk of text at the end is very distracting, given the fact the rest of the publication is just images. Finally, I still wanted the book to have some decent weight to it to obviously represent a tomb stone and I felt this also had connotations of death. I would do this by using thick paper stock. This would be tricky because if it was too thick it wouldn't bind properly or lay flat. Too thin and it wouldn't be heavy enough.
