OUGD503 PENGUIN BOOKS INITIAL IDEAS

I began my initial ideas by playing with the theme of perspective. The book is told through three different characters points of view, Auggie, Summer and Jack. To represent each character I began to source colours that represented them from previous cover designs. Using this books design I managed to source a blue, yellow and green symbolising each character. These are the colours I'd use to reflect the theme of perspective or even better combining them together in a narrative. I began placing the colours in a pie chart, symbolising three different sides but whilst being a part of the same object at the same time.

I wanted to combine the three separate colours or character into one to symbolise how the three points of view are place within the same narrative. To do this I would create a gradient with all of these colours merging into one which would hopefully create my first design.

These are some of the outcomes I have created, experimenting with gradient and textures to create a colour combination that resembled narrative and perspective. Using different textures also helped give it a nice aesthetic finish that wasn't too series, keeping in mind that this was a children's book. I then placed my chosen gradient in a grid system following the guidelines of the competition. Using the penguin books template gave the design more context.

After receiving some mixed reviews about the design, I thought I'd try refining it to generate a more traditional book cover design. The problem with it's current state was that it didn't reflect a classic book cover design, but perhaps that was a good thing. I returned to my pie chart of colours and began experimenting with overlaying them, creating a really simple image with the same contextual references as the previous design.

After experimenting with the three colours more, their aesthetic slightly changed throughout the process but still kept the same values and meaning. This would be a good start to creating a more classic book cover design. The colours still represent the three character and their perspectives throughout the book. Overlaying them then goes to show how they are all a part of the same narrative at the end of the day.

My final initial idea was not as successful as I intended as the idea behind it was really good however aesthetically it just looked like a Scream book. This was too misleading and would not be taken any further.
