OUGD504 BRIEF CRIT AND FEEDBACK

Today I discussed my brief at its most peak form to my crit group. They supported my idea and concept very well and also gave me a few other forms of median to test out. Using photography was my first idea but a few other techniques could possibly spark new creation, such as laser cutting the entire book into the shape of one of the masons signatures. Each back would be a part of this and as the book progressed the symbol would become smaller and smaller until it had fully disappeared representing the art of monumental stonemasonry fading over time as it has done.

Another idea given to me which I think I will definitely bring forward to my final design is that the book, just like a gravestone, should be extremely heavy. This could be done by attaching some heavy material inside the binding so the it is out of the audiences sight but plays a big part on the actual production. Another, somewhat literal but perhaps effective idea I thought of was to somehow integrate actual stone into the publication. I found this special paper that was made 80% of actual stone and the rest of chemicals. This paper would make a perfect cover for my publication and especially if I embossed the title into it which would once again represent a traditional gravestone.

Here are a few other notes taken from the crit:

  • Deep consideration into every design decision to make my publication as accurate to the craftsmanship displayed inside as possible
  • Perhaps scatter the pages to show the variation of designs found on headstones
  • Use only traditional design techniques to create the book
  • Make the book bottom heavy
  • Have some form of item that comes with the book to help it stand upright like a grave
  • Must have great consideration into the paper stock used
