26 Characters Photos

26 Characters Photos

I finally decided to narrow my ideas down to something more sustainable. My main concept would be movement. This is because each item has either came from somewhere weird, or travelled all around with me. For example, the elastic band ball has been created over 10 years of my life through the process of collecting elastic bands of the street in Newcastle, Leeds, London and Ireland and has followed me all the way. The socks are very old have been hard to throw away given the fact they're my favourite. Even though they are un-wearable I still keep them. They have travelled on my feet in all sorts of places over many years. My necklace is a valuable present which I have also had for many years and has a boor can opener as the charm which was a delicious beer. My coffee cup has came from the place I used to work at which was the best job I ever had and travels everywhere with me so I can drink out of it every day. Finally, cheese is my favourite food and I wanted to include it in several forms. Originally I was going to use my cheese board as that has also travelled far, but I found the cheese would be more fun to play with. To make these objects reflect upon this travel concept, I photographed them all in motion and documented them visually.

Another link I found between all of my objects was that given the fact I love them all, they all have a negative as well. I decided I also wanted to document this on top of the other idea also. For instance my mug has a crack in it and has coffee stains. My expensive necklace has a really cheap charm which contrasts it. My socks have holes in them and my ball is dirty and falling apart. Finally, the cheese goes out of date and gets pretty sweaty quite often. I took photos of the flaws in my objects to show this solid link between them.

Twenty Six Characters Idea Generation

Twenty Six Characters Idea Generation

Today I started a new studio brief for the publication 'Twenty Six Characters'. I had to bring in five objects that had meaning to me and find a link between them. This was so I could find something to have in common between them when photographing them.

Items:
  • Holy Socks
  • Coffee Cup
  • Cheese
  • Elastic Band Ball
  • Necklace

This was the idea generation I managed to create. Between which objects I found a few links that could help me in my photographs. For instance they all have a negative side even though they're all of use to me. The socks are old and have holes, the cup has a crack, the cheese can be mouldy, the ball is dirty and the bands snap a lot and finally the necklace is quite expensive however the charm is a very cheap beer can top. I show these objects in a negative light for a link.

I found it very hard to find ideas for this and most of them were a bit of a stretch. This made me think that some of my ideas were a bit far fetched so perhaps I could use this as an idea. Maybe I could stretch each objects and they could follow each other on a path across multiple pages like a road. Maybe this idea is aldo a bit of a stretch but it sounds good to me.

A final idea I had was to show my objects in motion. I had this idea from the fact each object has traveled very far or come from somewhere very random. For instance the elastic band ball has been created over 10 years of my life from bands of the floor in Ireland, Newcastle, London and Leeds. So I could show this travel within a photography for each object.

Fanzine Factory

Fanzine Factory

Today I took place in the fanzine factory. In groups, we collaged individual pages and passed it along. Each time a different person would collage another page and see what came of the whole zine. I mainly tried messing with typography as I found this might show some more narrative instead of random images. We also included letraset in some of the pages to give it added character and also to see what other types of forms we would create. I never used this before but I tried all sorts of stuff with it, for instance using it to create pattern, spelling words out or even making words with just the number zero. I cut the pages up and printed letraset within the several pages to attempt to make them link.

I noticed that there was a theme that travelled through each publication, depending on the first collage made. For instance mine was initially a type based collage and by the end it was full of typography based collages. Other trends I noticed was one publication was full of eyes, one was full of maps and another was very simplistic. Then we split these pages up into out favourites and created one ultimate zine out of them all. The theme stayed similar throughout and the pages were carefully laid out. The main theme however was collaboration which was an important part of this task.

A2 Poster Crit 2

A2 Poster Crit 2

Today I had another crit for my poster designs. All five designs were judged by my peers and they helped me select the few I should take forward for the final designs. Most of the feedback was relatively positive and there weren't many negative comments for any of the designs.

The first two that looked really similar were the groups favourite and also possibly mine as well. The feedback I received for them was to combine together into one ultimate design. They also recommended that I screen print it which I would like to do depending on if I have the time to do so. At first I wandered what would happen to the fuzzy effect on the design when it is expanded to A2, but the others said that it would make it look even better. They finally said that I should perhaps make one really busy design in the style and one simple one with just type and no images.

The second one I will take further is the super pixelated pink one. My peers seemed to really like the concept behind this one and especially behind the plain type based one also. My idea is to perhaps combine those two into one. Maybe by making it more pixelated it could turn out better.

Here is the so far final production of this design. This is obviously the busy version. I really like how it turned out and it's obviously very similar to the others, but with aspects of the both. Now I need to figure out if I'll screen print or digital print this. I also need to decide a correct paper stock for the job.

This is the further pixelated design which I tried to make to unattractive that it was good. I managed to incorporate the cut up type from the previous design and include it, however I don't know if it fits quite that well. The type isn't as pixelated ad the numbers in the central so I could either start all over again or go with the simplistic type design.
