Second book cover design
For my second idea I decided to approach it with typography, a whole new medium compared to the previous idea. I felt like this would be a good to use given the fact a lot of jazz records and posters were either made completely of type or had a substantial amount of it. I noticed between each book there were a few artists mentioned between all the books which I could begin researching their album artwork from. Some artists such as Jimmy Smith and Lee Morgan would type for a whole cover whereas some artists such as Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday would use a lot of photography, so perhaps I could use that medium for the next idea. The type used always had a similar theme throughout as well which was it would be bold and in your face. Not at all elegant and using many bright and vibrant colours.
Here is a typical example of typography used within jazz music. These are really well thought out pieces of type, however this is not exactly what I wanted to do for mine. I reckon I wanted to add a slightly more modern and contemporary look to mine, so my aim would be to have aspects of these in my idea. I think one of the most important parts here that I will take on board is the use of white space and the seclusion of the type in the centre.
These are some better examples of what I might like my final outcome to look like. I specifically like the bottom 'it's time!' cover. I think the reason I like it so much is because it is really individual compared to other album artwork of this genre. Thats the kind of the look I was going for and the approach I would definitely take, however the best one has to be 'The Rumproller' album as it remains a consistent typical 'jazz album' appearance with the contemporary unique twist. This may possibly the approach I take for this series of covers.
For this series of books I decided to use a new layout just for the purpose of variation. This is a very simple layout which could be used for many other things then just book covers so hopefully it works well with my designs.
These are my final three outcomes for this idea. I quite like how they have turned out and also how they fit within the grid system. The grid has made the white space available on both sides of the cover which is perfect and exactly what I wanted. Having the title added in clear text below the distorted text was a great idea as originally it was just the distorted text alone and it seemed a bit vacant and not as engaging as it should have been. Just like my previous idea id has followed a house style with similar colours throughout, however my worry is that maybe they look too similar. The reason these relate to the books is mainly for one reason which was the design of Lee Morgan record who was an artist referenced within each book. I reckon I did an alright job at manipulating my own version of it despite the colour change. The reason I chose these colours was the same as the last, due to its vintage look and acquaintance with the time jazz was invented. Maybe next time I could explore with other colours.
